We start with 100% USA-grown peanuts that we blanch and roast to perfection. Then we turn the peanuts into a thick paste using a special grinder. For Old Fashioned Smooth and Crunchy, we just add salt and that’s it! For Simply Smooth and Simply Crunchy, we add salt and small amount of palm oil to prevent oil separation in the jar. For Smooth Operator and Crunch Time we add a small amount of salt, cane sugar and palm oil, which helps prevent oil separation in the jar. For our flavored varieties we add a small amount of salt, cane sugar, palm oil, which helps to prevent oil separation in the jar, plus delicious, simple ingredients like honey, cocoa, or maple syrup to name a few. We never add any artificial ingredients, artificial sweeteners, artificial preservatives, or partially hydrogenated oils, and our peanut butter spreads are Non-GMO Project Verified.

How is Peanut Butter & Co. different from other brands?
We started with a sandwich shop in 1998 in Greenwich Village, New York City. We weren’t happy with mass market peanut butters and their questionable ingredients, so we started making our own from day one. We are committed to using simple, honest ingredients and only USA-grown peanuts. Many of our products are Non-GMO Project Verified, certified by Vegan Action, and certified gluten free. We even recently started our own farm in Northeast Arkansas with a mission to one day offer products from field to jar. We remain an independent, family-owned company run by our founder, Lee Zalben. What is a peanut butter spread?
Peanut butter is defined by the FDA as a mixture that contains 90% ground peanuts and can only be stabilized with hydrogenated vegetable oil. Stabilization helps keep the peanut oil from separating in the jar, allowing for a deliciously creamy texture with little to no stirring required. In order to avoid the hydrogenation process, we use palm oil to stabilize our spreads. Because we do not use hydrogenated oils, our products must be labeled peanut butter spreads. We list the % of peanuts in our products on the label.
-
Why do some of your peanut butter spreads contain palm oil? Is it sustainably sourced?
We use a very small amount of palm oil to stabilize some of our peanut butter spreads. Palm oil is a non-hydrogenated, non-GMO oil that is semisolid at room temperature. Adding palm oil helps to keep the peanut oil from separating in the jar, allowing for a deliciously creamy texture with little-to-no stirring required.
Peanut Butter & Co. is committed to providing products made with simple, honest ingredients and we support the production of certified sustainable palm oil through RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil). RSPO is a not-for-profit that unites oil palm producers, processors or traders, consumer goods manufacturers, retailers, banks/investors, and environmental and social non-governmental organizations, to develop and implement global standards for sustainable palm oil.
